This Year will be a little different for format. Since each category breaks down the “who” and “why” topics, I will start the article with each topic, last year’s nominees, last year’s winner, and who I am hoping to see on the 2025 ballots. Then if there are categories you are curious about, you can scroll down and see what led to the determining factors. This is definitely an opinion-piece, but I try bringing the facts. I listen to the feedback and anticipation of others in the industry as well and just draw my best conclusions based on all of the information before me. I hope you enjoy this year’s list!

*The following is a detailed breakdown of how I reached my suggestions. The suggestions listed are are gathered based on feedback from people within the industry. I research suggested names/companies, and do my best to provide informative information. For the judges category, I rely heavily on frequent competitors for feedback. For groomer of the year, I consider points earned during the year. I hope this is helpful!*
Groomer of the Year
Although this is not a category we vote on, I do really like giving applause to the groomers who get to all of the shows, hauling dogs, assistants, and determination to every show. I feel fairly confident that this year, Macie Pisa will have groomer of the year in the bag since she has racked up some serious points. Know that when you see the nominees in these categories, these are the competitors who have put their blood, sweat and tears into the competition ring. I don’t even feel worthy of writing an account of how worthy they are. Congratulations to all of the nominees last year, and congratulations again to Nadia Bongelli for winning! Very well earned.
Up and Coming Groomer of the Year
This is another category we will have no vote on, but Ginnie Potts, Bethany Domke, Kelcey Armstrong, Holly Baker, Maddie Olsen, and Nicole Beckman definitely deserve a mention! Ginnie Potts has a recent best in show win, but she has been winning long before that as well. She is a very knowledgeable groomer in the intermediate class, and she is always happy to chat or help anyone. Bethany Domke is a rising star, recently added to the All For Groomers team and rising in the ranks of competitions. Bethany is also a fellow Christian, and we admin a group on Facebook, Paws for Prayer, so if you want to join, please, join us! Kelcey Armstrong is a groomer from Brandon, Mississippi. We do not have a lot going on here, so when she placed 2nd in Poodles at Superzoo in her very first competition ever, that was huge! To anyone who has never competed, it is extremely difficult to place at large shows, even for seasoned pros, so to take home a win as a first-timer speaks volumes. When she won 1st place in poodles at Groom’d, I cried like a baby. I am so proud of Kelcey, I even became her sponsor, sponsoring free tools and sharpening. She is going places! Holly Baker and Nicole Beckman are also on the All For Groomers team. Both of these ladies are always doing 4-5 competitions per show, always up all hours of the shows prepping and staging stuff and somehow find time to help others too. They will always be top-groomers and mentions in my writing. Maddie Olsen is one that I do not know too well, but her name is buzzing in the industry right now. Everyone asks me if I have seen her poodle grooms, and I am totally here for it! Maddie I don’t know you, but you are definitely worth a mention; your work is beautiful!
Let’s give one more congratulations to Melanie Charland for her win last year! Melanie is extremely driven and a big-time perfectionist, making her a strong competitor in the ring. If you have not checked her out on socials, check out some of her grooms!
New Product of the Year
Last year, Jodi Murphy’s tool, the Coat Tender, was absolutely buzzing in the industry at the time of the awards. The marketing, product release timing, and the actual tool itself were all top-notch putting her strongly in the lead for product of the year. The product is still being well-received by many, so if you have not tried one, try getting them in your hands. The tools come in fine, medium, and coarse so be mindful of the different sizes.
Moving on to this year, products I really want to see on the nomination list are the Fluff it Comb from Fame, Slick Air by Dawn Neal, Flat Back Brush by Fame, Clip-It by Handle-It Company, and the Handle Hugger by All For Groomers. Some of these products are completely new concepts while others are remastered and revamped ideas perfected into new product releases. While there have been other fluffing combs and flat back brushes on the market, the ones offered by Fame are unlike any others I have used. The Fluff It Combs come in coarse or fine and the tines have a unique curve about 1/3 of the way from the tip. The curve works to brilliantly fluff fur and leaves it standing exactly where you want it. Bear in mind, I retail similar types of products; these 2 products are like nothing I have used before. I plan to add Fame products to my collection this coming year. If I am being honest, the Erotica Shear offered by Fame is also unlike any other shear I have seen on the market as well, so it is a good suggestion for Product of the year as well. Instead of a blunt tip like most other curved toothed shears, it comes to a point and has the teeth on the inner curve which, as a sharpener, I like that. The Slick Air is a product I heard a lot of murmurs about starting around January. Everyone wanted one, groomers vied to be ambassadors, everyone wanted a “code”; it was madness. I saw the Slick Air booth set up at Groom’d so I went up, introduced myself, and checked out the product in full detail. To anyone who does not know, I am the dubbed “Show Tour Guide”, at Groom’d! I added Slick Air to my “route” for folks who wanted to see my favorite items at the show, so Dawn Neal just looked at me very confused as I brought one person after another to the booth to buy the Slick Air. After the show, she sent one with me so I could show it to the groomers in Mississippi who don’t get an opportunity to go to shows often. Dawn Neal was a mobile groomer so she made sure this would be suitable for mobile groomers to use as well. If you have not seen the Slick Air, it is a dryer, with a heating element and the head is a slicker brush. The product comes with 2 different brush heads (long and short). Much like a hair dryer, you can activate cool shot or lock the cool shot option down. The dryer boast 2 speeds (high and low). This is not designed to completely dry a dog start to finish. This is more for fluff drying, stretching coat, or for dogs that detest the dryer. Think of all the doodles and other ill-bred drop-ear dogs that can’t stand the dryer on their face or ears. You know the dogs that you swear must always have an inner ear infection? Those! This tool is great for those dogs because they seem to tolerate this drying tool more than a velocity dryer. If you have not seen Slick-Air, get your hands on one at SuperZoo!
Michelle Jara-Price has added to the Handle-it line releasing the Clip-It. Am I upset I was not the first person she shipped them to? Absolutely, but based on the video Jess Adorno posted using it, I know that I want one, and I know they will sell well in my store. The clip-it is an adjustable arm that clips to your tub, table, groom arm, anywhere you can pinch an inch! The arm is fully adjustable and bends to position the handle-it handle anywhere you need it for better drying.
Finally, Product of the Year nominations would not be complete without the Handle Hugger. Can we take just a moment to praise Tommy and Kemlyn Stockstill for successfully rolling out a new amazing product each year and seeming to always earn a spot on the nomination list? That in itself makes me so proud for them, and proud to be a part of the All For Groomers team. For those who have not seen the handle hugger, the product slides onto brush handles and hand-stripping tools. These allow for a much more ergonomic hold that promotes a neutral wrist and a happy hand. My hands always struggle so I greatly appreciate this product!
Judge of the Year
Victor Rosado is one of the most kind and approachable people a person can meet. If you have never met him, he does seminars, shows off Utsumi tools, judges competitions, and greets everyone with a smile. Groomers on my sharpening route have stories of meeting him at shows and learning a lot from him, so that makes him a 10/10 in my book!
This year, as I have asked seasoned veterans of the competition ring about their favorite judges, a few names came up a lot of times. Adriane Pope came up a lot of times. It was brought to my attention that Groom Team regulations have changed for judges so they have had to move around a bit. Adriane Pope has really broadened her horizons in the judging realm and that has not gone without notice. Sue Watson is another name that gets brought up with shining acclaim when I ask about judges this year. Colin Taylor also makes the list this year. Not only does he judge competitions, but at Hershey last year, I witnessed him take an entry-level groomer under his wing. After the competition, she told me he offered to give her tips on products, tools, prep, balance, etc. He kept up with her after the show to offer feedback on how her groom was progressing as well. Since Hershey, her grooming has changed dramatically, and that means a lot to me. Colin did that even though no one would likely ever know what he had done; he did that just to help someone out. For that reason, he makes my list! Other names that were suggested by frequent competitors included Joey Villani and most of last year’s nomination list as well.
Creative Groomer of the Year
I love checking out the creative grooming competitions each chance I get. Thankfully, they get documented by the Creative Contribution, and I can go back and view them later if I miss a show. So far this year, as far as wins go, I think Alyssa Kasiba and Holly Baker have won the most creative competitions. This is followed by Jordan Peterson. You all are rocking it! There are 2 other creative groomers rocking it to the max this year too: Milena Kon and Miranda Seim. Obviously, Milena Kon is one of the most talented people I know. I love her artwork both on dogs and in her boutique DMK Bowtique (www.DMKBowtique.com). If you have not shopped her stuff, you are missing out. This year, Milena’s award-winning dog reportedly began to not enjoy creative grooming anymore. Milena is very passionate about her creative grooming, but she posted, “Before any accolades or any prizes or money I can win, my dog always comes first. Pandora isn’t enjoying this anymore. Is time for her to retire.” I was so excited to see the Dumbo theme come to life, and I have no doubt it would have been a winning design, but I respect Milena so much for doing what was right by Pandora first. Milena Kon has a huge following, and it made me appreciate her even more for sharing her experience and reminding everyone that the dogs we groom should always come first. I am thoroughly loving the new ZooTopia design she has started, and I suspect she will be a leading competitor in this category.
My next mention is for Miranda Seim. We all know her. We all love her. Last year at Hershey, she talked to me about her upcoming creative concept: a concept bravely discussing male violence and sexual abuse against women. It is uncomfortable to articulate the words to breach this topic even as I type, so the bravery to make this her creative theme and then speak through a presentation is unreal. I thought about it long after Hershey and I remember thinking, “there is no way..”, but she seemed so adamant. Miranda made a way, creating “I Choose the Bear”. At Groom’d she had a beautifully presented groom with chains because she was breaking the chains and speaking up, with a lumberjack and a bear to accompany the viral question, “would you rather encounter a man or a bear while alone in the woods?”, a tail adorned with a drink on one side and an axe on the other. The entire visual was a chilling and stark glimpse of what every woman fears deep down and sad memories many women keep hidden in their past. With a fire in her eyes, she began reading a poem about which encounter would be worse in the woods and why. She did get a shaky voice at parts, and there were tears lining her cheeks, but she continued on through the presentation, never missing a beat. She did this at more than 1 show too, really getting the message out there. For that reason, I really wanted to give Miranda the biggest shout out. She is so strong and brave for conquering that creative concept and delivering such an important message. While this creative was not a placement piece, the message won people’s choice award, and received a lot of feedback. There were men and women alike that reached out and shared their appreciation. If you missed it, you can view “I Choose the Bear” on TikTok . Feel free to share it and keep the message alive even longer.
Foreign Speaker of the Year
I admittedly had to reach out to many people and ask opinions for several topics, and this is one of them. I have already sang Colin Taylor praises, but I will reiterate I appreciate him greatly because he is extremely knowledgeable and willing to mentor, teach, and educate anyone wanting to learn. I respect that a lot. Marcia Strong is another one I place in that category. She is one of the most down-to-earth, humble friends I have. My favorite thing to do if we have time is walk past the competition ring because in 5 minutes, she can teach me more about the grooms than I could learn from reading or watching videos for 5 months. Some of the things she has taught me, I have taught other groomers I mentor locally, and they are completely mind-blown. Obviously, I am like, “Okay well, Marcia taught me that, but I am cool too!” (haha) In all seriousness though, Marcia is a phenomenal teacher whether through casual interaction or in a class. I like her class footage I have seen because she gets folks motivated and moving around, which is important as about 95% of our industry is riddled with ADHD. These tactics help boost information retention. Plus, she is Marcia frigging Strong. Enough said. Although I have no personal experience with Lisa Hart, many of my master groomer friends and open level competitor friends sing endless praises of her. I am obsessed with her Asian fusion grooming style so obviously if I ever did get an opportunity, I would be in her class for sure. Another serious boss in this category is last year’s winner, Nadia Bongelli. This is someone who constantly delivers with seminars, webinars, pre-recorded educational videos, etc. Nadia sets the bar very high.
Seminar Speaker of the Year
Last year Kelsey Ann Sexton won this award, and it was very well-deserved. I do not know many groomers on my client list that have not attended one of her classes and loved it. Also, if you have never spoken to her, you are missing out. Kelsey is absolutely amazing and easy to relate to in conversation. Since winning last year, she has broadened her show schedule to include shows outside of Barkleigh as well. This is a huge step, and it speaks volumes to how well-received her classes truly are. So along with congratulating her again for last year, I think she is a worthy nominee for this year as well.
Melissa Jepson is another speaker I believe deserves a seat on the nominee list. I have noticed she has increased her speaking engagements this year, and has even begun a new journey doing private lessons coupled with a weekend at her home in California. Obviously, I want on that waiting list, and I cannot wait to start seeing all of the happy groomer reviews. Melissa is always very kind and welcoming, and I am so happy to know her and see her doing such an amazing job! I really love that she focuses a lot on difficult grooms, geriatric dogs, and proper handling techniques. These are all very important, and I appreciate that she educates without berating people who may be using poor techniques.
Adriane Pope and Angela Kumpfe are also 2 legendary groomers known for their hands on seminars and classes around the country. Friends of mine in the creative grooming realm said this article could not be posted without a mention of how excited they are to see that Adriane and Angela have been booking a lot more seminars as of recently. These are two people I have not spoken to personally, but I did see Angela compete in duos at Groom’d in 2024. Everyone had said, “Angela is in duos? Well her team is going to win.” With that, I have had respect for her ever since. I have no doubt Adriane Pope is equally incredible based on the amazing insight and suggestions she gives when she judges competitions. You simply cannot be that great as a judge if you are not also an incredible groomer.
I also want to add in Blake Hernandez and Nathan and Kathlena Austin. Blake has been a grooming globetrotter doing seminars for most of the year, and the Austins have also been stepping up and taking on international seminars too. It is truly awesome seeing them share videos of the traveling experience because it shows young groomers in the industry that the sky is the limit. Also, the salon footage shows happy energetic groomers, so I know the classes must be amazing!
Up and Coming Speaker of the Year
I will never forget Stephenie Calhoun’s award speech last year as she told us how others had tried discouraging her in the past. “Well look at me now.” She is such a sweet person, and I love that victory! Very well-deserved award, so one more congratulations before we dive into 2025 nominees.
I would like to start by suggesting Holly Baker and Alicia Mulac as a duo for their in-depth colorist class. That is a 7-hour certification class that goes more in depth than cosmetology courses on color. Yes, we are talking about color wheels, color correction, color chemistry, color safety, bleach safety, etc. Even when the ladies gave me a synopsis of the course, I learned stuff. That is how saturated it is with information. I would also say Holly Baker could be a stand-alone nominee for speaker of the year as well. Last year while we were all at Hershey, she was in China! She is highly sought for her knowledge. I like to help salons coordinate seminars, and Holly Baker gets asked for a lot. Obviously for creative classes, but also for business classes as she runs 3 successful brick and mortars and a mobile with a staff of 22 groomers. She has all of that going on, and still competes in 4-5 competitions at each show. So yes, Holly Baker for up-and-coming speaker of the year, or for groomer of the year, or just introduce an entirely new category: Super Woman of the Year. She is winning!
Another Super Woman on my list is Loren Mesquita. Loren has her “Groomers Glow Up” class that has been getting rave reviews. The course is about identifying your next upward moves, the steps you must take, and maximizing the success of each step to reach your ultimate glow up. If you follow Loren Mesquita on social media, it is clear to see her techniques have worked in her life. She has taken all the steps to be a powerhouse on all fronts of our industry in my opinion. Pay attention to any information she shares, because she is walking proof her methods work.
Another top contender on my list is Ashley Hanvey. Ashley Hanvey has extensive training and certifications with a specialty in behavior and handling. Her latest class, Dogs are more than Hair is very in-depth coverage, and I have no doubt she is on the rise for her speaking engagements.
Samantha Palya is also a worthy nominee as this year, she has had more speaking hours than ever before. She had one show this year that she had to withdraw from due to family. She had put her young son 1st as he battled with some anxiety about her leaving. This showed me that although Sam’s career is important, she will always put her children first. Missing even one show can cause negative repercussions, but Sam bounced back stronger than ever, bringing her young son to a show with her soon afterward, and this sparked her to come up with “Operation Read-A-Page”. Sam, as always, motivates me and sets a good example, as a mom and as a speaker within our industry.
General Distributor of the Year
This is one category that does not need a long, expansive breakdown. These distributors all do the most getting the products and tools you need to succeed in the industry. I have strong connections and ties obviously with Groomer Supply House, but since working with Pet Stylist Relief Fund, I have formed more of an appreciation for the others as well. Elena Volnova of Pet Store Direct works so hard at her booths, you wouldn’t be able to know at a glance that she is the CEO. I remember when we first spoke, she not only was very willing to help however she could, but she also complimented me for being a successful female in the male dominant industry of sharpening. She is so accomplished herself, but she gave me that extra boost, and I respect women who build one another up. Pet Edge and Ryan’s are huge contributors to the Pet Stylist Relief Fund as well. Many of our recipients receive gift cards and immense discounts from both to rebuild their salons. Groomer Supply House CEO, Cody Thweatt, has not only contributed thousands of dollars worth of tools and shears; each of the sharpeners, including myself have donated tons of sharpening, tool collection, raffled sharpening vouchers, tool restorations, and inventory from our stores as well. Within the Groomer Supply House brand team, I want to thank Lance Hayner of Sharpies Sharpening, GSH CEO Cody Thweatt in Fort Worth, Texas, and Dennis Brooks of Sharp Edges in Illinois. While all of the sharpeners in our group have contributed so much time, effort, and tools, these 3 have done the most by far. Lance collected a truckload of items, sharpened them, and gave them to me to distribute to PSRF recipients. Dennis has raffled sharpening vouchers, donated thousands of dollars’ worth of sharpened tools, and constantly reaches out to me to see if there is more that he can be doing. Cody Thweatt cleared shelves of clippers to send to PSRF to be used for groomers in need and raffled in auctions to raise money for the fund. The Groomer Supply house team even has a Facebook group where we answer maintenance and repair questions and promote DIY repairs so groomers can save money instead of buying new tools. (Do not throw away your clipper when a $15 hinge is all you need!) I am proud to be on team GSH, so there is no secret, that is where my vote remains.
Instagram/Tiktok of the year
The nominee suggestions I listed above are based on content quality, consistency, and relatability to grooming. There are other creators I love that are top-picks for me, but I couldn’t list them all. If some creators have more personal videos or other categories of videos also on the page, I chose to leave those off. They are all great, and I admire the creativity and hard work everyone puts in creating content!
Entertainment Video of the Year
Congrats to Marcia on taking the win last year! This year, I chose more videos that made me laugh. Obviously I don’t suspect everyone will have the same top-picks I have, but my goal was to link the videos I appreciated so maybe others may check them out as well. These are my favorites, and I am pretty sure Paige Ward has my vote this year. Hard to say though, because I lost my breath when Jay Snowdon taunted with, “Yeah, I will see you on the Google Reviews.” We had some amazing videos this year! I want to give a special mention to Evan Gummo’s video that left a lasting impression since its debut at the 2024 Barkleigh Honors award show. The video shows the utmost inclusivity to every single person within the industry.
Vendor of the Year
Obviously, I am on the All For Groomers team and I will always root hard for All For Groomers, but I am also so happy for Botaniqa on their win for vendor of the year in 2024. The brand has great products and amazing ambassadors. I always know I can confidently pick a product by reaching out to Kayla Scott or Paige Ward and letting them know exactly what I am looking for. Each member on the team happily helps, but those two are my favorite friends on the team. If I have a product I like, they do well showing me a Botaniqa alternative that is better. I also want to note that the show rates on Botaniqa products is unbeatable. Congrats on the 2024 win, Botaniqa!
For 2025, I would not be surprised to see the Botaniqa brand nominated again, but if you know me, you know I like offering up new options too. This year, vendors I want to see hit the list include Knightmare Aesthetic, Evolution Shears, All For Groomers, and Fame. I choose these vendors based on shows they attend, contribution to the industry, and overall vibe. Admittedly each of these vendors offer a different vibe, but each is one I totally love. When I go by the Knightmare Aesthetic booth, I picture Cayela Sherman in heart-shaped glasses, cool as a cucumber, and oozing utmost chill-vibes. Black lights, lava lamps, and edgy illustrations personally created by the artist herself, Cayela creates the most beautiful “knightmare aesthetic” scene one could imagine. Not only is cayela getting her art on apparel, tumblers, trading cards, jackets, keychains, and stickers for retailing in her shop. She has also done custom art for Pet Stylist Relief Fund and RW GroomX. Cayela also donates items to auction every single time disaster strikes our industry. Any artist can tell you how generous that is. Cayela’s art is heartfelt and each piece has an intimate connection to her soul, her memories, and her emotion. Her greatest motivator as an artist was her older sister, and though she has passed away, a piece of her exists in each of Cayela’s creations. Each piece seems to remind Cayela how her sister had pushed her to keep drawing. If you have not checked out Knightmare Aesthetic, I urge you to follow Knightmare Aesthetic on Facebook and check out Knightmare Aesthetic’s website.
Fame always offers a unique vibe as well. I loved how Loren said at Groom’d that her theme was, “grandma’s attic”. With a sequined tablecloth, disco balls, and random knick knacks around the booth she truly nailed it. You can see Loren’s content creativity in her booth at each show too. She has photo areas, a demo area, and displays that command attention and selfies to be taken. I love working at Loren’s booth because if there is something Loren doesn’t have, she will happily refer you to another vendor booth. She thrives on working with other vendors and not against them. While Loren runs a nice booth, she must staff it with helpers as well as she gathers content for Groom Team USA, teaches classes, assists groomers, and cheers on competitors ring-side. So far I have seen Cassy Wood, Marcia Strong, and husband Joe Mesquita working the booth. All 3 have a vast understanding of the tools she sells, and they are great at engaging in conversations and making connections with folks. I too have worked the booth, and I am impressed with the tools Loren and Colin have brought to the table. People have asked if I have traded allegiance from GSH, and the short answer is, “no, never.” You can love more than one brand, and for me to agree to work at a booth or be affiliated with a brand, the tools have to be good. Fame is a worthy nominee for vendor of the year.
Another booth I work at often is the All For Groomers booth. This is another vendor that I will always see fit for the title of vendor of the year. Tommy and Kem get out to all of the shows. They educate groomers on the importance of ergonomics and neutrality in the wrist. They promote career longevity and carry quality products to help make that possible. Tommy has brilliantly impressed me each year as the line has expanded by one well-thought out tool each year. Tommy always smiles at every passerby and genuinely enjoys every friend he makes as a vendor at all of the shows. When he saw Operation Read-A-Page take life, he immediately became a sponsoring business to get the books. Also, All For Groomers is a former, “product of the year” winner and has continued being a “product of the year” nominee in following years. For that reason, I believe All For Groomers is a worthy nominee for vendor of the year.
My final suggestion here is Evolution Shears. The entire team is just so kind, and they are at every single show. This is pretty hard to do, so I admire them for their persistence. Chris Bear Anthony and Mindy Dinwiddie do an amazing job fitting the shears and educating groomers on the tools. Even when I first visited the booth years ago, I apologized and explained I ask hard questions. Where some booth staff may stumble on the sorts of questions I ask, Chris was able to confidently answer everything with great accuracy as I learned about the tools. If I get a pair of Evolution Shears in for sharpening (which is rare because most folks ship them to Moe), if there is something going on or I need a part, Chris and/or Moe will promptly ensure I get what is needed. Any shear can need a replacement part from time to time. The fact that they are quick to help and stand by each shear speaks volumes for the brand. Evolution Shears is a worthy nominee for this year’s vendor of the year.
Website/Facebook of the Year
This year it seemed like everyone started new Facebook groups. I aim to avoid drama, and for a while, Facebook teamed with it at every turn. That provoked me to look more closely at websites than social media this year. That does not mean a Facebook page will not take home the win this year; I believe Pro Groomer Network has been a reigning champion for many years. Since this is my article, though, I will use this space to admire pages that offer up the best education. Leading Edge Grooming Academy is one that Nadia Bongelli plugs a lot. Her winning educational video from last year was published on the Leading Edge site, and when I asked her about possible nominations this year, she only sent the Leading Edge. Check out the site! It has a lot of amazing videos and educational material.
Super Styling Sessions TV, which was also a nominee last year, has an incredible catalog of tutorials, including some free ones. This is a great way for you to see if you like the videos before committing to a subscription. Even if you have no plan to subscribe, you would be foolish not to visit the site and view the free lessons. Free education is a true gift.
Groom Haüs was a nominee last year, and honestly, I was surprised they did not take the win. The site has a lot of fan-favorite groomers as well as other lesser known but highly skilled groomers providing educational videos. The site is also a community linking viewers to upcoming in-person seminars, which I love. I will note, if you check retail items out through Groom Haus, pay attention to where the affiliate links lead you. Many items link back to a direct retailer or to Pet Store Direct which is more suitable, but some are linked to Amazon. I personally would prefer supporting the distributors I see supporting shows and groomers. I absolutely love everything else about the site, and I love the affordable access to educational information. Groom Haus is a worthy nominee in my book!
Groomer Supply House and maintenance Group is a worthy contender for this category. We are only as good as the tools we use, so groups focused on tool maintenance, care, and DIY services is worth its weight in gold. Last year, I gained so much acclaim for educating groomers on their tools, maintenance, and troubleshooting issues. If this is information you crave, join us in the Groomer Supply House and Maintenance Group. Another great site worthy of nomination is Pawsitiveed ran by Anjie Coates. This is an accredited training site with certificates available upon course completion. The training is amazing, and I refer the groomers I mentor to specific certificate training on Anjie’s site. The certificates are printable, and they look great in a frame on the wall. They instantly boost the skillset of the groomers I work with. I love that groomers have the option of subscription service or paying for specific classes. The summits are also noted as being very epic. Stop by and see what Pawsitiveed can offer for you!
Blog/Vlog/Podcast of the Year
Last year, Another Grooming Podcast took the win, and to be honest, they have continued putting out great content this year as well. The group of 4 have amazing storytelling skills, and they tie in stories as they also discuss shows, grooming, products, and anything else that may pop up. If you are not one of the 15K followers for their Podcast’s Facebook page, go give them a follow now. They also do giveaways for followers that you will not want to miss out on.
I still really like the Podcast hosted by Loren Mesquita and Quinci Cole, Paws for the chit-chat, too. This podcast has grown into this year, and honestly, I have no clue how the 2 busy ladies keep up. It may not seem like it but consistently hosting a live podcast every 2 weeks takes a lot of discipline, especially with the busy schedules Quinci and Loren are bound by. I have an appreciation for how they shine the spotlight on groomers within the industry, too. I loved all of the guests. Since my appearance, there has been Annette Crystal Andrews, Ren Netherland, and Ginnie Potts. I am sure I am leaving out some others as well, but it is always groomers and vendors that deserve more mention than they are receiving. Each week, they have talking points lined out, and since it is done over live stream, they interact gorgeously with the comments as they come in. It is just a lot of fun to catch!
Although Shannon Wynings-Roberts started hosting The Daily Groomer: After Hours in late 2023, I would say she is reaching new levels now. We are talking full bloom, and Shannon is no delicate flower. She keeps it down, dirty, little raunchy, max realness, and good vibes always. I love that she has such a diverse range of guests. The guests are from all corners of the industry and as she navigates episode to episode, you can see Shannon stays true to herself. There is no filter with Shannon, but that is part of the fun interacting with her. She reminds me of Virginia each time I see her, and I swear to you, if you have ever lived in Virginia, you know it is just a vibe. I can always spot a Virginian in a crowd. Each year, I listen to my groomer clients as they tell me which groomers they would want to meet or which groomers they follow online. This year has been the highest surge of groomers telling me that Shannon Wynings-Roberts is at the top of their lists as who they want to meet. That makes my heart so happy because she is one of the realest in the game. Catch me and Shannon after this article is published because writing about everyone isn’t enough this year; we are going to talk about you too! (haha All good stuff though!)
New Book of the Year
Congratulations again to The Pet Stylist Playbook! If you have not kept up with Groom Curriculum this year, they are still moving full-steam ahead. Sierra notes that Upskilling Course and Upskill: Fast Track course are now available. Groom Curriculum will also have a merch line launching very soon. Be sure to sign up for the newsletter so you can stay up-to-date with this ever-evolving group as they keep rolling out curriculum, content, and merch. I missed on Instagram when they had the free downloadable PDF file for seeing shapes in the grooms, so I am hoping they circle back with that again. Be sure to follow so you do not miss it!
This year, I believe the book-front has been less eventful. I have asked everyone I know, including Anjie Coates, if they know of any books. Last year, Anjie was the one who told me about which books had come out during the year. There have been many good downloadable files this year such as the Shapes PDF from Groom Curriculum and there is downloadable content on my site as well, but nothing compares to the books from years-past that have been nominated in this category. It would be disrespectful to list downloadable pamphlets to take this space, so I would rather leave it blank, and ask anyone with new books to message me so I can update the article!
The Brian Stopa Congeniality Award
This category will definitely be very driven by opinion, but these are all great people. At the end of the day, you have to vote based on your own observations and experiences.
At Groom’d I walk around a lot. It is the first show I attend in the year, and I like to see what new items have rolled out, meet new faces, and then show other people at the show what all of my favorite booths are. It is fun! This year, I was so happy that a lot of my clients from Mississippi and Alabama were in attendance. Nathan and Kathlena stayed very busy with certifying dogs, and at times the lines of people waiting on them were overwhelming. At one point Kathlena had come over to a booth I was visiting, and the vendor was saying how big of a fan she was and how much she really wanted to meet Nathan. As the show wound down, Kathlena went back to the booth with Nathan, and said, “Well I told her I would come back with Nathan so they could finally meet. We are leaving soon, so I said we needed to stop by her booth.” I thought that was really kind because they had stayed so busy the entire show. I knew they had to be exhausted, but Kathlena made it a point to stop back by. After that, I heard many others saying how Kathlena Austin is like mama-bear to so many other groomers, and I thought that was sweet. Kathlena and I don’t find time to speak often at shows, but we do speak on Messenger, and she has always been very humble and willing to help. Kathlena helped arrange me to be a vendor at one of their seminars. She agreed to try helping me start up an educator auction with Pet Stylist Relief Fund, which led to her educator time raising $5,000 for groomers in need!
Melissa Jepson is another groomer that I feel is a worthy nominee. She also stays extremely busy at shows speaking, doing demos, and working at the Precision Sharp booth. Since we never find time to speak, I remember the first time we did speak, I was like, “Is this weird? We have never gotten to actually speak before.” Haha. Sometimes it is just like that, but she was just as sweet in person as she is online. Melissa is now even opening her home up to groomers for a weekend at Mel’s where she will do training and tours of sites surrounding her home in California. Inviting anyone and everyone to your home to learn is about as congenial as it gets.
Teri DiMarino is someone I do not know as well, but someone else messaged me and told me she should be mentioned for the congeniality award. In the last couple of years Teri experienced a lot of loss, but she never missed a beat. She still showed up at shows, putting on a smile and helping others. When I was told all of that, I remembered how I have been overwhelmed at shows and asked dumb questions as I am bordering an anxiety attack, and Teri was there to answer my questions in such a calm, warm way, it made me feel calm as well. Kind souls like that always deserve recognition!
Another kind soul that seems to grace this category every year is Tommy Stockstill. Tommy always seems to find ways to help. This year, he pitched in to help fund books for Operation Read-a-Page. Any and every time he sees an opportunity to contribute, brighten someone’s day, or help someone in need, he jumps on the opportunity. I got a package from him the other day, and it was a zip up hoodie with my name on it and the All For Groomers logo bedazzled along the back. It was such a happy moment because I have felt disconnected since having surgery on my hand a couple of weeks ago. He found a way to remind me I am included even though he is thousands of miles away. And that is just who he is; he will make everyone feel like they are part of the family.
Shannon Wynings Roberts cannot know that I see her as a great nominee until after this is published because she might heckle me for my decision. Although I am her “super Christian friend”, Shannon is such an amazing person herself. Yes I joke and call her a heathen, but she is kind and inclusive to others. When we first met, we had no clue of who one another was, but we spoke as though we had been friends for ages. That is just the person she is. I love that she does live stream videos and a podcast and gives spotlight to so many other people. She has built a significant platform, and I love seeing her use it to help others that are up and coming. I love that if she sees someone being wrongfully excluded in any way, she will come to their defense. Shannon shows her congeniality every day by loving fiercely, having everyone’s back, and chatting us all up. Also, her 10/10 banter is amazing.
Educational Video of the Year
Congratulations to Nadia Bongelli for the win last year. If you did not get a chance to view the video, it was featured on Leading Edge Dog Show Academy. When I spoke to Nadia briefly about any nomination recommendations for this year, she said to definitely consider the content on Leading Edge. With that said, if you have a favorite educational video from Leading Edge this year, nominate it! Here are a few I have gathered. I chose these because they are great, but also because these creators are busting their butts posting tons of educational videos for free. When I hear groomers say they can’t afford continuing education or online subscriptions, I direct them to these creators. Even if you know who you are voting for, check these out as well, and be sure to follow them for more free knowledge.
Journalist of the Year
Last Year’s Nominees: Anjie Coates, Jessica Clark (that’s me, yall!), Jonathan David, Mary Oquendo
Winner: Jessica Clark
Obviously, it still means so much to me that I was nominated and actually won journalist of the year. I feel like that proves to everyone, you can be an absolute nobody and win if you just put your whole heart into it! When I started writing this article for this year, I did not think I would be deserving of a nomination again this year, but this has been a painstaking writing process. This year, I am trying to link stuff so groomers can hopefully click and visit pages to like, subscribe, follow, and all that good stuff. To the groomers who took the time out during the Pasadena show to message me links and nomination suggestions, I appreciate it. I forgot how many hours of research goes into this piece! I think Stephenie Calhoun has done a lot more writing this year. I really liked her latest article on tech solutions in Groomer to Groomer magazine. Our writing styles are definitely different, but I love that her writing is concise and gives me all of the information swiftly.
Another nominee I think is well worth the nomination is Dr. Cliff Faver. For years now I have enjoyed reading the stuff he writes, and his articles in Groomer to Groomer are always topics that pique my interest.
For me to read articles start to finish, they have to hold my attention. Cliff Faver and Stephenie Calhoun both write articles that do that for me. Would I like to be your nominee again this year? Absolutely, but I want everyone to also consider the writers who are releasing articles more frequently as well.
AKC Master Groomer of the Year
Congratulations again to Kathlena Austin for winning AKC Master Groomer of the Year! This was a very well-deserved award. I have no clue who this year’s AKC groomer of the year will be or who potential candidates may be this year, but I am excited to see the names that get brought up for the honor! I am thinking Kat Greaney may be a possibility.
Contribution to the Industry
Jay and Sue are legends in the industry. I am so sure they have no clue who I am (as many don’t!), but they are always so kind to me. That makes me certain that they must be kind to every person who they come in contact with. If you have not checked out their website, you need to. They even have some free educational videos. My favorite is a 40 minute westie tutorial. I owned westies for 16 years, and I can confidently say a lot of groomers cannot properly groom a westie. If you aren’t sure where to set your lines or your westie tails look like Christmas trees, watch this free tutorial from the Super Styling Sessions site, and consider subscribing!
Contribution: Dr Cliff, Loren Mesquita, Operation Read-A-Page
Dr. Cliff Faver and Suzanne Marchetti were on the list last year, and they will remain contenders forever on my list. Many groomers can recount a time when Dr. Cliff has come to their aid simply out of the goodness in his heart. Suzanne is always close by in case she can help as well. He teaches classes, writes, and educates any chance he can. He has examined dogs at shows that have fallen ill. He has helped speakers verify dog health information in their classes. Suzanne has told me at dinner before how he is always getting calls and helps each person every time. People like that are becoming rarer and deserve recognition and praise. Dr. Cliff contributes to the industry through his products, his writing, his classes, his videos, his veterinary profession, and all the calls he receives. Dr. Cliff helps selflessly, and I am proud to know him and Suzanne Marchetti.
Operation Read-A-Page is another new and exciting contribution in our industry. If you have ever visited a show with your kids, you know there are difficulties. Many of the kids I see are behaved, but they do not hide their boredom. My children, however, are bad. I will never forget my younger son getting a running start and belly sliding down the slick floor in the showroom at Groom’d. I was mortified. Now my older son has just been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, so I have been homeschooling him to help him get caught up with his learning. For these reasons, Operation Read-A-Book is right up my alley! If you haven’t seen yet, children are now given a copy of Dr. Seuss’s “If I ran the Dog Show”, and vendors are gladly getting onboard reading pages of the book or signing the books when children come to their booths. The entire idea is to include the children and encourage reading. I am 100% in love with this. The books cost about $8 each, but they are given to the children for free, so it is important to recognize the company’s making this happen as well. Thank you Enrichment Stylist, All For Groomers, and Cosmos Bathing Systems for funding the books to keep Operation Read-A-Page going.
Evan Gummo, for those who may not know, is the director of digital media for Barkleigh. I always get a feeling he does way more than that though. He aids in preparing everything we see on the screens. He sends positive messages in everything he creates, with last year’s theme being that we are all welcome at the shows. Almost everyone I know has gotten into a show or two by saying, “Evan sent me!” He is someone I know for a fact is always busy, especially on show weekends, but he will answer within 10 minutes if I message him with a question or need help with something. This is not because I am anyone special; that is just the person he is. Evan is always helpful and contributes light into this industry. He is mostly behind the scenes working silently, and it is time for him to be the one in the spotlight. When I forewarned Evan I saw him as a nominee for this category, he told me, “Contribution to the Industry is a category meant for those who truly move this industry forward. I’m simply doing the work I love, which in itself, feels like the greatest reward of all.” What he does far exceeds his role at Barkleigh, but he would rather see others get the recognition. While Evan Gummo may not want a nomination here, he definitely deserves a mention in this category.
Another top-pick is Loren Mesquita. She is someone who I met last year at a show, and I am so happy that we met when we did. This has been someone I have watched in wide-eyed wonder. To say I have watched her “grow” or “climb” would be an understatement. It is more like I have watched her supernova into a new plane of existence. She still owns her salon, she has a social media business that is booming, she runs social media for Groom Team USA, she is a board member for Groom Team USA, and she has her own brand co-owned with Colin Taylor with their own line of tools. One may look from the outside and think, “well, it looks like the industry has done her well,” but I have gotten to see beyond that. I have gotten to see all that Loren feeds back into the industry. I have gotten to see her countless times, say, “well, this won’t take much of my time, so let me just make this content to help these folks out,” even though she has a business and typically gets paid for those services. I have seen Loren step away from the Fame booth more times than not because someone needs help, which could be critiquing a dog, doing a hand-strip demo, getting content for someone else, helping someone else who is making content, help a vendor, cheer someone on, being a shoulder to cry on, literally anything, Loren is there. Also, she has a new class, “Groomers Glow Up”, which talks about making steps to grow and making each step count. For someone who has accomplished so much in the last 2 year span, she is willing to teach others to do what she has done, too. Loren truly wants to see everyone succeed around her. Loren told me that only about 10% of groomers are making it out to shows and seeing the benefit of attending continuing education events; her goal is to grow that to 15% in the next 5 years through social media. I believe that she will exceed her goal based on the impact she has had on Groom Team USA. The coverage is better than ever, and many of my groomer clients now see what Groom Team USA is, and they understand how these groomers get on Groom Team USA. They see the coverage showing the world competition. They see it ALL. Because Loren is capturing it all. And still running a salon. And still mentoring others who ask her for help. And running her international brand with Colin. And being a good friend to anyone and everyone. I had surgery 2 weeks ago, and Loren has checked on me more than my family. Everyday I get a message making sure I am still okay and asking if I need anything. Another huge impact Loren has had on the industry in the past year is being open and transparent about her sobriety journey. To anyone who knows me, you all know I don’t drink and I love hearing others say they are giving up alcohol. That said, I go out to dinner with lots of groomers and vendors and 98% of them drink to some degree. Quitting drinking when most of your friends are drinkers can be nearly impossible for some, but Loren has not missed a beat. It is important that she has shared her journey to let others know if they quit too, they are not alone. She has posted a lot of raw videos to motivate others, promote mental wellness, and promote physical health. One video I loved said, “getting healthier happens with each healthy choice you make.” I love that. Since a majority of our industry seems to have ADHD, that really was wise wording for the groomer audience. You may not be able to achieve the big goal in a day, but you can win a little each day with each healthy choice. Her weight loss, healthy eating, exercise, and sobriety have been shared with upmost transparency as well as all of her strategies for success in her “Groomers Glow Up” course. Another very special thing about Loren is I love how she teamed up with Quinci Cole to start a podcast that gives spotlight and coverage to groomers and vendors in the industry that don’t get enough recognition. There are so many groomers and vendors out there doing amazing things and simply not being seen. It means a lot that Loren and Quinci share their platforms to give exposure to other groomers and vendors in our industry that deserve the spotlight. I cannot say enough about why she has my vote. I admire everything about her, and she would happily share all that knowledge to see everyone be just as successful.
My final mention in this category is the Pet Stylist Relief Fund. I want to thank each and every person who has donated time, services, tools, artwork, gift cards, etc. Being a part of this team this year, has really shown me some of the most beautiful and most tragic moments. When we have new recipients approved, I always reach out via text just to check on them. Typically, I form lasting friendships. Hearing the hardships the flood victims and wildfire victims faced, brings tears to my eyes. Seeing them rebuild, restart, and conquer their new journeys is extremely rewarding. Getting texts saying PSRF helped folks through their darkest chapter makes my heart so happy. PSRF would be nothing without the volunteers, donors, partnered sharpeners, distributor contributions, and education raffles. This is just a great reminder, we are stronger together. If you have not filled out an application, I suggest filling one out to keep on file in a safe place (or cloud storage). If hardship strikes, you will be happy you have it already prepared. If you attend shows often, and would like to volunteer to man the booth, we are currently in dire need for booth volunteers and social media assistance. Show this awesome non-profit some love!
